Hi, I’m Nancy, Elder Buddies Founder.
I created Elder Buddies the moment I realized navigating elder care is too big a job for one person or even one family. Especially in today’s world when most of us are busy with jobs and families of our own, “being there” isn’t always as easy as it sounds.
My 94-year-old mother is in an assisted living facility in the Midwest. Living on the West Coast, I experienced first-hand the many challenges of keeping up-to-date with her care. One day, I couldn’t reach my mom on the phone. It took me hours to finally locate her – she had been taken to the hospital with an infection. I immediately booked a flight from Seattle to Cleveland the next morning.
When I arrived, there was so much to do. I needed to find her eyeglasses and phone charger, misplaced in the middle-of-night hospital transfer, and gather her clothes as she had nothing but a nightshirt and hospital gown. I negotiated for two days with social workers and administrators to find a skilled nursing facility for her recovery. As I sat by my mother’s bedside, trying to make the right arrangements, I was grateful that I was able to be there when she needed me. But what I wanted more than anything was someone to lean on. Someone who could be there when I couldn’t, and give my mother the kind of care and attention she deserved.
That person did not exist. Until now.
